Opening

When you start up the game for the first time, after being treated to a lovely opening, you will be up at the title screen and then the menu. If this is your first time playing, the options will be...
  • New Game
  • Wi-Fi Options
Otherwise, your options will be to continue your game and have other options like logging and stuff. Start up a new game, and then you will go into the infamous scene where you get to define your personality. How it works is you will be asked a series of questions, each one having two to four answers, and depending on your responses for all of these questions, and depending on whether you say you are a boy or girl, you will become one of the following Pokemon:
  • Bulbasaur
  • Chikorita
  • Treecko
  • Turtwig
  • Charmander
  • Cyndaquil
  • Torchic
  • Chimchar
  • Squirtle
  • Totodile
  • Mudkip
  • Piplup
  • Pikachu
  • Meowth
  • Skitty
  • Munchlax
Since for now, the game — and its questions — are in Japanese, and since the questions are picked randomly each time you play, and are in a random order, your best bet is probably just to answer questions at random and keep restarting the game until you get the Pokemon that you want.
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon 2: Questions
You will be asked a series of questions to determine your personality and what Pokemon you will become.
Also, the last question that is asked will determine whether you are a boy or a girl, so rather than counting all of the questions, just be on the lookout for the question that looks like this:
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon 2: Are you a boy or a girl?
Are you a boy or a girl?
The top answer is boy and the bottom answer is girl. Your choice here does help to determine what Pokemon you will be, and some Pokemon are only available as certain genders. After choosing your gender, the top screen will turn blue and say something, and then you will need to touch the bottom screen for a bit. Touch it anywhere on the screen for a little bit in order to proceed. (It is possible that how and where you touch it helps to influence what Pokemon you become and what selection of Partner Pokemon you have available, but I'm not sure.)
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon 2: Touch the Screen
Touching is good!
Then, it will show you what Pokemon you have turned into.
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon 2: What Pokemon are you?
I'm a Chimchar!
Finally, you'll be shown a selection of Pokemon that you can choose to be your Partner. There are 7 Pokemon to choose from, and no Pokemon that is of the same type as you will be on this list (so if you become a Squirtle, you won't ever be able to pick Totodile, Mudkip, or Piplup). Pick whichever you'd like. Again, these do seem to be somewhat random, and I have had times where even being the same Pokemon twice resulted in different options.
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon 2: Pick your Partner Pokemon
You can choose 1 of the 7 Pokemon shown to be your Partner throughout the game.
After you have selected your Partner Pokemon, you will have to give it a name. You are limited to 5 characters, but fortunately you can use English letters if you select ABC on the side. It should pop out in colors in any dialogue, but it is still good to give it a name that you will be able to recognize.
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon 2: Give your Partner a name
Japanese names too hard to recognize? Select ABC on the side and...

...you can give your Partner Pokemon a more recognizable name!
